Ethiopia's Struggle With Destitution

By Darrel King

Lots of people might wonder how Ethiopia continues to be stricken with poverty even still today. Beginning early 92, the Ethiopia economic stability has been in a dire state while economic performance has been much lower. Around 46 percent of individuals are officially classified as very poverty stricken. What is even more crazy is just 25% of Ethiopia's population has access to clean potable water.

Ethiopia's troubles resulted in a rise in criminal violence and increased illegal drug consumption. The nation's cultural state has been endangered because of the rise of many economic issues like increasing inflation, where it has grew to above average levels. In part is had been because of loose financial guidelines, civil service wage increases, along with increased meal costs. Plans have been made to lessen the inflation burden with the hope of attaining lower than 10% over the next year.

There is a prominent need to do away with African poverty overall. It saddens the majority of individuals to hear that Ethiopians and particularly children have to suffer in such a way. Interestingly enough, Ethiopia is referred to as the water tower of Eastern Africa. This nation possesses the highest water resources throughout Africa, but merely a couple of irrigation systems are set up. Imagine exactly what may be done with adequate financial assistance.

In addition, the majority of poor households must share their own living spaces with their farm animals while 40 percent of kids will fall asleep on the ground. Right now the typical size family of 6 or 7 individuals would reside in a small square foot mud and thatch hut with lower than two hectares of land to develop. It is obvious that these kind of living conditions are generally deplorable.

Financial conditions forced the majority of people to construct their houses by making use of whatever materials they may come across, which often happens to be mud or wood. This creates sub-standard living conditions at all levels. Additionally, the most urgent demand of most will be proper sanitation as a result of non-existent waste material treatment facilities.

Due to lack of nutrition, hunger, as well as disease, many a farmer have a very difficult time tending to their own land, which leads to reduced productivity of agricultural development. There also is a lack of reliable irrigation too. Even though conditions seem to be far better in the cities, most if not almost all of Ethiopia suffers from poverty and poor living conditions.

A variety of non-profit organizations continue to be working in the direction of solving the poverty issue in Ethiopia. They're in desperate need of non-profit donations to help eliminate the issue. Here is where we can help by simply giving to non-profit groups. In the end it'll benefit everyone who is affected with malnutrition due to African poverty, and allow us to bring back Eastern Africa to the beautiful place it once was.

United States Politics by Larry Shultz

By Larry Shultz

Larry Shultz: Vote for the Nation

One of the most confusing aspects of the United States presidential election is how it works. As you may know, the president is not decided directly by gaining the majority of votes in the country. That is how a leader can actually not win the majority vote in the nation and still win the election. This is because of the existence of what is called the Electoral College, and how it comes into play in the actual counting of the votes and the amount of votes a president actually gets.

When all of the Electoral votes are awarded, a presidential candidate has to gain over half of them in order to win the presidency. This can often be announced well before all of the states have even announced their winners and all of the Electoral votes are awarded. A presidential candidate campaigns to win the popular vote within a particular state. When the votes are cast, each state counts votes on its own. When the votes for a particular state are counted, the electoral votes for that state are all given to the candidate that wins the popular vote in that state.

The Electoral College is the group that is actually responsible for electing the president. There are currently 538 electors in the College. They are all divided among the states according to the population of the state. Therefore, larger and more populated states have more electoral votes, and the presidential candidates will try to gain these states.

The president is not elected directly because of majority vote, but by a portion of 538 Electoral Votes given from each particular state as the president wins the votes in the state.

The US votes are awarded state by state and then counted. The votes are then counted by Electoral college and then given to the candidate. They believe that the system initiated may be flawed to some extent because of this possibility. Supporters, though, argue that the system is more efficient this way. It allows the votes to be counted individually and not on a federal level, possibly allowing for less error.

Bill C-30 and Government Prying

By Roger Frost

The Lawful Access Law is a new bill that Harper is trying to pass that would require all telecommunication and internet providers to install surveillance equipment that would monitor all their customers phone calls /text messages/emails(to whom and from who)/downloading /surfing/internet shopping purchases etc. and then the communications companies would in turn be legally required to turn over all and any of their customers records to the police who could demand at any time without any prior notice these records without restrictions or a warrant.

The Privacy International investigation revealed that surveillance companies commonly promote virtually unlimited monitoring capabilities to governments and police agencies. For example, Italian-based Innova offers "solutions for the interception of any kind of protocols and IP-based communication, such as web browsing, email and web-mails, social networks, peer-to-peer communication, chat and videochat."

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews certainly upped the rhetoric on this debate by connecting critics of the legislation to child pornographers , but Canadians are clearly against some of the basic tenets of the bill. The survey suggests Canadians believe cracking down on online crime is important - but they are not prepared to give up some of their freedoms to do it. In fact after the uproar and eventual withdrawal of the bill, Vic Toews, stated that he hadn't read it.

Our local newest MP, Kellie Leitch spoke to Metroland Media about the controversial bill, which if passed in its current form, would give law enforcement the ability to obtain names, addresses, IP addresses and e-mail accounts from Internet service providers. The bill is called the Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act. Some in opposition believe the bill is a violation of Canadian's online privacy and freedom. She possibly even went to school with Vic Towes, or maybe they have the same instructions on what to say. Vic never read the bill, you have to wonder if Leitch did either. Why is it elected officials only do what the Prime Minister tells them to do, and they never listen to the people who elect them.

The inspectors may "enter any place owned by, or under the control of, any telecommunications service provider in which the inspector has reasonable grounds to believe there is any document, information, transmission apparatus, telecommunications facility or any other thing to which this Act applies." And, once he or she is in, anything goes. The inspector, says the bill, may "examine any document, information or thing found in the place and open or cause to be opened any container or other thing." He or she may also "use, or cause to be used, any computer system in the place to search and examine any information contained in or available to the system."

The Bill is even written is such a way as to be obsure and obtuse. Section 23 l Personal information, as defined in subsection 2(1) of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, that is provided under subsection 16(1) or 17(1) is deemed, for the purposes of subsections 9(2.1) to (2.4) of that Act, to be disclosed under subparagraph 7(3)(c.1)(i) or (ii), and not under paragraph 7(3)(i), of that Act. This section operates despite the other provisions of Part 1 of that Act.

US Prohibition

By Bill Tower

The Volstead act or Prohibition act took effect in 1920. In several states across America laws were already in place to halt the consumption of alcohol. These laws were in effect ahead of the 18th amendment (Volstead act, Prohibition act) was enacted before congress.

New York was the 1st state to possess any such laws passed in 1697. This law plainly stated that bars and alcohol consumption establishments have to close on Sunday. Sunday for the majority of religions is supposed to be considered a day of rest and prayer rather than drinking. In Georgia in 1735, the government passed its 1st state wide ban on alcohol. The ban survived only seven years and was a complete failure.

In 1851, they attempted again to instill a ban on alcohol in Maine, and this time it worked even better than they had thought. By 1855, a dozen other states joined Maine in becoming what is known as a "dry state."

Following the Civil War in 1880, women of all ages joined the "dries". It was not long before the temperance movement became a power to be reckoned with. The conservative Woman's Christian Temperance Union, WCTU, was established and the Prohibition Party began gaining steam.

By 1900, more than 50% of the continental United States was dry. The prohibitionists believed they had the alcohol ban locked up and there wasn't any possible way for any person to acquire alcohol in a dry state. However, for the dries, the US Postal Service inadvertently furnished a loophole. Since the USPS was governed by the United States government not the state government, spirits could be purchased and shipped by a wet state. This angered the dries. In 1913, an Interstate Liquor Act was passed. This act effectively made it illegal for any individual to send liquor to any dry state in anyway. The end results was actually a step backwards for those attempting to keep liquor out since it gave rise to illegal strategies of acquiring the alcohol because liquor distilleries were now in league with crime bosses.

In 1917, the 18th amendment was drafted rendering it illegal to purchase, ship or make liquor. This didn't sit well with numerous states. The amendment was argued in congress for a further 2 years. In 1920 Thirty three states had declared themselves dry which meant a major victory for the prohibition party.

January 29, 1919. The 18th Amendment was ratified to make all hard liquor having an ethanol content over 80 proof (40%) be forbidden. Legally, it banned the production, sales, or transporting of such alcoholic beverages. It was supported by many people as they thought that only hard liquor would be banned and that it would be fine to enjoy a glass of wine with supper or drink a beer in the evening. Nevertheless, it wasn't until 12 months later, the Volstead Act (prohibition act) was approved. The Volstead Act totally banned all alcohol that had over 1 proof (1/2%) of alcohol. This effectively banned all types of alcoholic drinks, aside from non-alcoholic beers. After the 18th amendment was ratified, the Volstead Act was brought into the light by the Prohibition supporters. For the majority of the prohibition supporters who only wanted just a little wine or the odd beer believed they'd been betrayed since they were left with nothing at all when the act was passed.

One group that no one considered were the veterans of WW1. These soldiers felt very betrayed returning from fighting in the war. Most of them had been stationed in France and came to know how a reasonable amount of alcohol could enhance the quality of life. Returning home and discovering that the dries had won a complete victory over alcohol added to the bitterness of the veterans disdain. The fatal miscalculation with prohibition was to ban all forms of alcohol. Eighty percent of the Prohibition Party supporters abandoned the party. Prohibition lasted for 13 years in the US until in 1933 the 21st amendment was passed to officially end the ban on alcohol.
